Abigail Rowand was born July 18, 1794 in Gloucester County, New Jersey. Her surname has been found to be spelled as "Rowin" in some records.
When Abigail was 10 years old, she was indentured to serve John and Elizabeth Jessup for a term of 7 years, four months, and 25 days. I can only assume that her parents died when she was so young or that they were very poor and unable to support her.
Just after her indenture was over, she married Josiah Jones on July 18, 1813 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.
They had 6 children...
Mary Ann Jones (1814-?) married Charles Rowand
James B. Jones (1819-1884) married Sarah Colebreath
John Bowman Jones (1825-1912) married Mary Stites
Barbary Jones (1826-?) married John Brawer (or Brewer?)
Abigail Jones (1827-1907) married 1st _____ Runyon, and 2nd Charles Tees
William Clement Jones (1833-?) married Emma Gilliam
Sometime between 1826-1827 the family moved to Philadelphia, proven by the fact that their daughter Barbary was born in 1826 NJ and their daughter Abigail was born in 1827 Philadelphia
Abigail's middle name of "Cross" leads me to believe it is a family name, but have not found any Cross family connected to the Rowand family. Their son, John's, middle name was "Bowman", which could also be a family name, but from which side (hers or Josiah's)? Another possiblity is that those names were from the doctor that delivered them or family friend, which I have found to be true of other family member's names.
She died on April 18, 1883 in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, her death certificate did not name her parents.
